If聽you have a聽Nest Thermostat you聽probably heard聽about the recent聽outages聽and may be living in fear of聽being left without heat in the dead of winter.聽
But fear not!聽

Nest Thermostats that were聽updated at the end of 2015 or beginning of 2016聽to software version 5.1.3 or later聽may be having problems, including becoming unresponsive, not聽correctly聽charging the battery, or聽turning off聽completely. Nest聽suggests聽recharging and restarting your thermostat to聽fix聽the聽glitch聽and get it up and聽working聽again.聽
Signs聽of this聽glitch聽include the following:聽
- The thermostat聽not working in聽the聽Nest application and disconnected from the Wi-Fi聽
- The thermostat聽tells you the聽battery is low and it needs to聽shut down聽
- The thermostat’s聽animated properties聽are slower than usual聽
- The thermostat聽shows an alert that says,聽“Please remove the thermostat from its base, then reattach it;”聽
- The thermostat’s display聽is black聽and unresponsive (you may also聽see聽a blinking red or green light above the display)聽
- The thermostat can’t control the corresponding聽heating and cooling unit(s)聽
If your Nest Thermostat聽will turn on聽but you can’t control it or it’s聽slow, try manually restarting it聽beginning with turning聽the thermostat off and then back on again. If your Nest Thermostat is off and won’t turn on, take the thermostat off the base and charge it using a聽USB cord plugged into a wall charger or a computer.聽
PLEASE READ: Do not try to聽restart聽your thermostat while it’s still connected to a computer for charging. (They didn’t聽go into detail聽why, but if聽Nest says聽don’t do it,聽DO NOT DO IT.)聽
After聽approximately聽10 minutes of charging,聽unplug聽the Nest Thermostat from the USB聽cable. If the聽component聽has turned on聽while plugged in,聽power it off聽and then turn it back on again, manually restarting the聽system. Once it has聽restarted completely, plug it back in to聽reach full charge. After聽about 60 minutes聽of charging,聽unplug聽the Nest Thermostat and聽reconnect聽it to its base.聽
