HVAC Refrigerants Will Be Phased Out: Here's Why

Transitioning Away from聽Your AC’s聽R-410A聽Refrigerant聽and聽Its Impact on聽AC 黑料社区聽in聽the U.S.

The聽HVAC industry聽is聽starting to undergo聽a聽big聽shifting to,聽transitioning to聽new聽HVAC refrigerants聽mandated by聽the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act of 2020. The goal is for the聽cooling聽sector聽to聽slowly replace聽the current class of聽refrigerants聽while also聽setting up聽new聽guidelines聽for the refrigerants used in the聽design聽of central聽AC units聽and heat pumps. The聽new class聽of聽refrigerants聽has a聽smaller聽environmental impact聽compared to聽the聽ones聽currently聽in use.

As you can聽guess, this will聽significantly聽change聽how聽HVACsystems聽are聽marketed聽and聽serviced. But will your聽current聽AC unit聽be聽impacted? The total home comfort Experts at聽(866) 963-7996聽can聽provide more details. We’ll聽offer聽details聽about聽why聽the聽AC聽Refrigerant聽R-410A聽is being聽replaced聽and how聽it could聽impact聽you.

This聽summer, 2024, will be聽crucial聽to this聽transition.聽R-410A聽production聽has already been聽cut聽by 40%,聽causing聽upward pressure聽on the聽cost聽of both聽servicing聽current AC systems聽and聽installing聽new聽AC systems. Most HVAC聽brands聽have聽started聽to聽swap out聽their聽older聽AC聽and聽heat pump聽units聽over the聽year,聽preparing for聽the 2025 deadline, when they will have to聽completely聽stop聽the聽production聽of聽systems聽with聽R-410A.

As of聽January 2025, all new聽AC systems聽and聽heat pumps聽will聽have聽to be聽designed聽with the聽next generation聽of聽A2L-class coolants聽in mind.聽Servicing聽for聽older and current聽R410a AC systems聽will still be聽possible, but聽eventually,聽the supply of聽refrigerant will become聽scarce聽and its price will rise. But that聽poses the question:聽Why IS聽R-410A聽getting the boot?

Why Is聽R-410A聽Being聽Phased Out?

R-410A聽is聽far and away聽the most common聽Refrigerant, having been used for聽decades聽as the聽standard聽for聽conventional聽AC systems. Unfortunately,聽recent studies have聽shown that this refrigerant contains聽high levels聽of a聽chemical聽known to聽cause聽global warming. To聽deal with this, in September 2021 the EPA聽released聽its聽specific strategy聽to聽majorly聽limit聽R-410A聽consumption. The聽strategy聽requires聽the聽use聽of A2L, a聽different class聽of聽.

This isn’t the first time the聽sector聽has聽needed to adapt聽to聽evolving聽environmental regulations. Most AC systems used to use R-22 refrigerant before it was聽first swapped out itself聽by聽R-410A. Sound complicated? Well, it is. The cycle continues as our government聽try its best to聽reduce聽the impact these聽substances聽have on聽our聽environment.

The聽newest聽class of聽A2L refrigerants聽are, like聽past聽refrigerants, non-toxic. There is one聽major聽difference, however.聽The聽new A2L refrigerants are聽slightly聽flammable.聽However, the average homeowner has no cause for concern as聽new systems聽using聽A2L have been designed with the聽utmost safety聽in mind.

R-32:聽R-32 is another聽modern聽A2L-class refrigerant,聽chosen for聽a聽lower environmental impact.

R-22:聽R-22 was the聽usual choice聽for聽decades, but it’s already been聽Phased Out聽due to its聽damage to聽the ozone layer. If your聽AC聽is more than 15 years old, it may still聽run on聽R-22.

R134a:聽R134a is聽rarely found聽in聽home AC units, and is more聽frequent聽in聽automotive air conditioning.

If your聽AC unit聽was聽set up聽in 2010 or before…

You聽are more likely to聽have聽an air conditioner聽that still聽uses聽R-22 refrigerant.聽Servicing or repairing聽R-22 systems will be聽costlier聽as replacement refrigerant becomes scare.聽Anyone聽with聽old聽R-22 systems聽will need to聽consider聽replacing it with one that’s more efficient and聽environmentally-friendly. It’s still possible to replace聽an R-22 AC unit聽with one using R-410a, but you should聽realize聽that the聽supply聽of R-410A is聽starting聽to聽deplete. You聽can聽also聽replace聽the older聽unit聽with a聽brand-new聽A2L-based system, and you have Expert local聽resources聽from聽(866) 963-7996聽to help you聽navigate聽this聽annoying聽home comfort聽headache.
