• The condenser fan motor on the unit聽may聽be unable to spin but聽still has power reaching it, creating resistance that聽produces聽a pronounced—and often loud—humming聽noise.
• There could be a mechanical or electrical聽failure聽with the contractor relay switch,聽which is聽responsible for starting the outside unit when the indoor temperature聽arrives at聽the level where cooling is聽required. When the contractor聽malfunctions, it can聽create聽a humming sound. The switch聽should be聽in the exterior condenser unit outside your home.
• The circuit breaker is overloaded – normally, your circuit breaker trips聽when聽it becomes overloaded. However, if the circuit breaker is聽faulty聽and聽won't, you聽might聽hear an electrical humming noise.
• Ice on condenser聽– if your unit freezes聽over, this can聽cause聽a loud humming or buzzing noise.
